AT&T ripoff

AT&T is busting my budget, affectionately known as “B. J.’s boojay.”

More than a few folks had related to me sudden problems with Internet connections, phone jacks and other equipment essential to communication.

Shortly after AT&T took over my Bell South account, I discovered people were trying to call, but my phones were not ringing. The AT&T service rep passed up two phone jacks in my apartment and made a beeline for the kitchen jack, which he diagnosed “corroded” – the first such problem I’d had in 22 years of service from said jack. That shiny metal rectangle now gracing my wall cost me $115.

Then, an AT&T rep sold me on the purchase of a plan offering 24/7, unlimited, state-to-state long-distance calls at a monthly fee I couldn’t refuse,

I happily gave up a Sprint toll-free number I’d had for 11 years.

Then, I got my bill. A red flag went up when my new balance was the highest I’d had in years. A closer examination revealed I was being charged more than the rep had indicated.

Then, of course, there were 15 – 15, count ‘em – appended taxes and fees itemized with indecipherable code names, acronyms and abbreviations – totaling more than the basic service charge.

I innocently believed a call to AT&T would take care of the overcharge on the long-distance plan, but the rep wouldn’t budge despite my protests that the plan had been misrepresented to me. So, I dropped the plan.

To my chagrin, the next month’s bill was even higher. That’s when I discovered long-distance calls were 35 cents a minute (compared with Sprint’s 10 cents). We haven’t seen those kind of per-minute charges in years.

Attempting to switch back to Sprint, I was told that company no longer offers long-distance plans for home telephones and is now concentrating on cell phones.

I need a cell phone like I need the shingles.

Throughout all these exchanges I was forced to listen to the “bundling” spiel – although I have long since figured out the least expensive way to go.

Now, thanks to one AT&T lie, I cannot make long-distance calls. Suddenly, I’ve been warped back to the days before the bust-up of the AT&T monopoly.

Naturally, this news item yesterday caught my ear:

“AT&T reported an increase in unpaid phone bills in the fourth quarter, another sign that consumers are stretched.”

Stretched? I’m hanging on for dear life!

Maybe AT&T customers have suddenly found themselves with bill increases they had not anticipated and are unable to pay.

Fortunately, I’ve managed to cover mine.

The Associated Press reports:

“Telephone companies have cut off FBI wiretaps used to eavesdrop on suspected criminals because of the Bureau's repeated failures to pay phone bills on time.” FULL STORY

The Bureau blames an “antiquated” system of keeping up with money dispensed to its 56 field offices – and an embezzling bookkeeper to boot.

My system of accounts receivable and accounts payable is slick.

Jan's bill shot through the ceiling when AT&T first took over Bell South. Then Jan got rooked into the bundle system with AT&T, being assured that it would be cheaper, 24/7 long distance calls and DSL would be $99 per month, add my cell phone and it would be even cheaper than what I was paying for cable, DSL, cell phone, etc. First bill was $227 plus change from AT&T with close to $50 for the Direct TV. That doesn't add up to just $150 per month which was supposed to save Jan over $60 per month. They are using George W. Bush's "fuzzy math" during their sales pitches!

When they took over Bell South Jan thought, "It wasn't that llong ago that the AT&T monopoly was broken up and now it's happening again!"

People have to ban together and demand the breaking up of the monopoly again. And demand truth in advertising. Do away with the small print that can't be read at
all and put some sunshine on the document so people aren't suckered into these obnoxious contracts hawked by snake oil venders.

Jan detests such "crooks & liars."

I feel your pain BJ. The only difference is that our Axis of Evil is Charter with our bundled phone, internet and cable bill. Not $99 as the commercials boast but $183 after the first year. One call after another to Charter is like the comedian skit... "Were the phone company, what are you going to do about it? Snort, snort!"

Customer service is a thing of the past. Now that we have computers (that don't lie), the humans read what is on the screen and don't take care of the problem at hand. False advertising and hidden fees under the guise of small print "we told you so's" keep thier consciences from hurting... BUT WAIT... computers have no conscience!

Jan said that her bill would have been 99 dollars. They are playing with psychology. The reason it is 99 dollars and not 100 is so that we can see the two digit number rather than a three digit number. We psycologically think the number 99 is far less than the number 100. So it is false advertising if we recieve a bill that goes past the psycological two digit number.

I read an article about capitalism once that I wish I would have copied. It was saying how it had no feelings and how it was similar to a drug. Years ago we had to put laws into place for false advertising. Psychological advertising is just as bad because a non-psychological intity is constantly trying to "reel us in." If I may use fishing terms, they give us a gift (worm) and stab us in the mouth (hook) because we have taken the gift. Then they leave us in the water with their line attached to us. All the time having us think we are free but when we face the fisherman, he tugs the line letting us know that he has the power.

Another morning soap box... LOL... Enjoy!

Don't forget to thank the Bush administration for may of the present bad deeds of capitalism, with its hand-off mentality. Look at the example of the sub-prime market and tax cuts. These people think that unfettered markets are the elixir to everything. Thank goodness they were not able to privatize Social Security. Imagine what you would be paying into it now?

BJ, how 'bout this for ATT/BellSouth service? When we have rainy weather around here I can't get online. I have wireless DSL blah blah service with these folks . . . but only in pretty weather.

I've complained to their computers, but so far so bad.

Frodo was all prepared to compose a comedic bit of foreplay when he heard that AT&T even cut off one of Bush's "spy lines" under the "Patriot Act." BJ one-ups him again. Rats, Frodo really wanted to put Earnestine together with the Incomparable Moron ("Two Ringy-Dingys").

Frodo:

As Jerry Rubin used to say, "Do it!" I loved Earnestine and her switchboard and would love to read your take!

I'd even put a link here!

Yes, yes I am fine in the land of tornados and earthquakes, just above the land of fires and mudslides. It all happened somewhere else, and I am lucky. I am to the point in life that I think of life as a series of near-misses.

I am also lucky with my phone service, from what you all are saying. Wow! I use Quest, and have no problems to speak of. I call the East Coast often because of my family so I elected to have the $4.95 fee that limits my minutes to, I think, 5-cents a minute? 3-cents? I don't remember. There are different deals. I remember getting it lowered by calling and re-negotiating. The whole billing program is ok. Nothing jarring. I do know that there are no problems. Customer service is a long and arduous process, but there's been no problems. Been there for years.

I am not sure about different areas of the country. In the Pacific Northwest we are so green I'm surprised we have telephone poles.

I had Sprint far earlier, and it wasn't bad, just got a better deal with Quest. I remember researching the costs on the net. I just have a landed phone, I think they call it. No cell. Had a cell for car emergencies, but it never ever ever worked in an emergency. Duh.

I guess I should mention that I have never gotten drawn into the bundle services. Pay seperately for Internet and phone.

I totally love the post. AT&T sucks. They are getting the flying monkeys as well as MSNBC.

Took 8 months to get phone line buried; should've known something was bad when had to lift lines to mow. Now, offering DSL to people on same road within a mile, won't bring in, "not marketly feasible." Now raised dial-up cost to more than DSL this month. Company work for from home going high speed, won't work w/satellite or wireless (only wireless avail is AT&T, stuck now with broken promises, unreliability of wireless, and very high cost). Another company within 1/4 mile offering DSL, but AT&T's area, won't allow in. Waited 5 years now AT&T saying DSL should be coming soon, ha, ha, ha. Liar is being too nice. Another job going, going....

interesting. this blogger for Multichannel News (part of Variety Group) just toasted AT&T, says she's finished doing business with them. When the writers for the voice of the cable/telecom industry start saying this...

I got a bill from them for 2,539.39 for using a three day free trial xm radio satellite that the At&t rep guy told me it was for free now I tried calling customer service 4 times one day and they wouldn't do anything about it so I went to the store to see if they could help but nope they couldnt. I don't know what to do can anyone tell me because I'm certainly not paying for it.

Dear "Anon:"

Thanks for your comment. I hope you will bookmark and read my blog and leave further comments.

Do this: call your state attorney general's office and ask to be put through to their consumer protection division. State your problem to this office. Be sure to get their mailing address. Then xerox all essential receipts, bills, etc., and send with a cover letter to this office. They might ask you to fill out a mailed form. One more step: send Xerox copies of all of this to the home office of AT&T (you can find the address online). Don’t mess with the middle man!

I had a similar problem with an unbudging credit card company once, and after I wrote the attorneys general in four different states and mailed the credit card company copies of my letters and the AGs respones, the credit card company got the message and my problem was resolved!

The worst thing you can do is NOTHING.

Remember where I am and come back and let me know how this came out! BJ

I figured out what the ATT Phone monopoly is doing, at least to me for my DSL service.

ATT is simply running a pyramid scheme with their DSL service.

Here's how they do it...

1. Sign up for "High Speed Internet" for just $11.95/mo.

2. Six months later hike rates to 19.95/mo.

3. Three months after, hike rates to $25.00/mo. telling customers they need to pay this increase to keep the speed they had originally.

4. Offer increased speeds for $35-$65/mo or higher.

5. If customers don't want to pay, tell them (Extortion)their "service" will be slowed down until they do pay.

__________

This is nothing but a Bait 'n Switch pyramid scheme where they jack their rates after sucking you in with teaser rates.
