A voice is silenced

Steve Capus of NBC announces "Imus in the Morning" will no longer be simulcast on MSNBC. A voice which has spoken out for Americans - from veterans to children - and challenged corruption in government has been silenced. Who will be next?

Craig Crawford of Congressional Quarterly, a regular Imus guest, proved to me that he was a man of integrity, standing by the I-man throughout the week. Crawford said he was loyal to friends and inanimate objects. I hold him in high esteem!

I‘ve been a fan of Don Imus for more than a decade. For the past three years I’ve been a guest on ”Imus in the Morning” nearly 70 times. I don’t get paid for it and we have no off-air relations (not even a single conversation outside the show), so I feel no conflict of interest in rising to his defense.

Imus has said himself many times this week that he screwed up with his comment about African-American basketball players. I forgive him. He made a lame joke. So what. This was no racist diatribe. Anybody who has really listened to this man for any length of time could not possibly conclude that he is a racist.

I wonder whether those now branding Imus as a racist even know how relentlessly he promoted Democrat Harold Ford Jr. last year to become the first black senator from the South? Imus is an equal-opportunity basher who seeks his own rough notion of the truth with no hidden agenda.

On various occasions, Imus has called me “white trash,” “half-a-sissy,” a “communist,” a “pinko liberal,” a “cry-baby” and a whole bunch of other stuff I don’t even recall. None of it offended me in the least because I know – and appreciate — that this is a comedy show featuring plenty of blunt and outrageous language not intended to be taken seriously. Sure, the show also manages to sneak in lots of worthwhile news and insightful opinion, but this is not “Meet the Press.” And even when he screws up, I am still glad that Don Imus is on the air for all the other times that he says what needs to be said when few others dare to say it.

Imus is now getting hammered by a ridiculous turn in our culture that glorifies perceived victims, no matter how slight or unintentional the supposed offense might be. So, let him get slapped around if it makes everyone feel better. But his apologies have been genuine — more so than the grandstanding by those who seek publicity by attacking him.

I will never forget how brave Crawford has been this week!
